Sustainability is Our Priority
Fortescue is committed to developing green energy solutions with environmental and social responsibility at the forefront. Factoring in key sensitivities and values, ongoing impact assessments will shape the site layout, reducing our environmental footprint.
Green hydrogen and green ammonia are emission free alternatives to fossil fuels. It is one of few green alternatives for industry that is hard to electrify, like the maritime sector. The Holmaneset Project aims to contribute to this transition away from fossil fuels.
Environment
We aim to protect nature and biodiversity by applying and aligning with the Fortescue environmental, social and human rights policies and standards, national laws and regulations, and good international industry practice.
In line with this, an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) has been undertaken for the Holmaneset Project. Findings of environmental sensitivities and consultation with stakeholders have been used to inform Project design and reduce the Project’s environmental footprint.
Reusing Green Hydrogen Byproducts
The production of green hydrogen and green ammonia generates valuable by-products, including oxygen, heat, and water. Where possible, these will be recovered and re-used within the facility to enhance efficiencies and reduce power consumption. When internal reuse isn’t feasible, we seek external opportunities to support other industries, such as aquaculture, water treatment, and manufacturing – supporting the development of green economies and contributing to broader sustainability goals. This approach is central to our efforts under Project CircuS, an initiative developed in collaboration with the Bremanger Municipality.
Project CircuS
This project, supported by Vestland County, aims to explore sustainable business opportunities by reusing by-products from green hydrogen production.
By leveraging cross-sectoral collaboration, we strive to create a circular economy that maximises the use of resources and generates economic growth in the region.
Community
Our ambition is to have a long-term positive impact and presence on the local community in Svelgen and the surrounding region. We aim to achieve this through robust impact management, the provision of training, jobs and business opportunities, community programs, and other initiatives that support societal development.
Boosting Local Jobs
It is estimated that the Holmaneset project will employ 35-70 people directly. There will also be opportunities for local and regional businesses to provide different services both during the Construction and Operation phases, which will support the creation of indirect jobs. Fortescue plans to work with local and regional associations and businesses to maximise business, development and employment opportunities and other synergies.
Creating Sustainable Community Opportunities and Benefits
Our investment in Svelgen extends beyond the Project itself—it's an investment in the people. Developed with local and regional stakeholders, our Holmaneset Local Content and Community Investment Plan focuses on creating sustainable value through green education, jobs and business opportunities.
